What Is Reiki and Energy Therapy

Picture
One way I often explain Reiki, especially to those who feel unsure about the idea of “energy,” is through the analogy of Wi‑Fi. We rely on Wi‑Fi every day. We can’t see it, touch it, or prove it with our senses alone, yet we know it exists because we experience its effects constantly. When the Wi‑Fi isn’t working well, we don’t assume the entire system is imaginary or broken beyond repair. We understand that something is interfering with the signal, the connection needs support, or the system simply needs to be reset.

Our energetic and nervous systems work in a very similar way. The human body runs on electrical impulses, communication pathways, and constant information exchange. Stress, trauma, illness, emotional overload, or prolonged pressure can disrupt those signals, creating areas where communication becomes fuzzy, overwhelmed, or shut down. Reiki and Energy Therapy work by gently supporting the body’s ability to restore clear communication, helping the system “reconnect,” regulate, and reboot.

Importantly, this means the body is not broken. Just like Wi‑Fi, when things aren’t working smoothly, it doesn’t mean something is wrong with the system itself. It means it needs support, recalibration, and sometimes repeated care. Reiki and Energy Therapy offer support in a non-invasive, gentle way, allowing the body’s own regulatory systems to come back online and function more efficiently.

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive practice that works with the body’s natural bioelectrical and nervous system activity. While it is often described in spiritual language, Reiki can also be understood in very practical, science-based terms.

The human body is not solid in the way we often imagine. It is made up largely of energy and electrical signals. Every nerve impulse, muscle contraction, heartbeat, and thought is communicated through electrical activity. This activity creates measurable electromagnetic fields around the body, something that can be detected, mapped, and even photographed using modern technology.

As a Reiki and Energy Therapy practitioner, I am trained to sense subtle changes in this bioelectrical activity. Many people describe it as similar to feeling heat rising off the pavement on a warm day. In areas of balance, the body’s signals feel smooth and even. In areas of stress, injury, emotional strain, or nervous system overload, those signals feel uneven or disrupted, like an echo that doesn’t quite settle.

Rather than diagnosing or interpreting these sensations symbolically, Reiki works by responding to the body’s physiological state. I follow the nervous system’s signals and support the body in returning toward balance. You can think of this as similar to how a lie detector test works: the body responds automatically to stress, thoughts, and environmental input, and those responses can be felt and measured.
Reiki and Energy Therapy do not involve belief, religion, spirits, or supernatural intervention. Nothing is imposed on the body. Instead, the process supports the body’s own regulatory systems, particularly the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for rest, repair, and recovery.

Research has shown that Reiki can support relaxation, stress reduction, and nervous system regulation. Reiki has been used in hospital settings, including alongside chemotherapy, where studies suggest it may help patients better tolerate treatment by supporting relaxation and physiological regulation.

In simple terms, Reiki and Energy Therapy help the nervous system settle. When the nervous system is supported, the body is better able to process stress, regulate emotions, and engage its natural healing mechanisms.
